Cheyney University officials are calling on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education to reconsider the school’s probationary status given in November 2023, citing concerns over its impact on the university’s reputation. University President Aaron Walton denounces the decision as unprecedented and unjust, citing significant improvements made by the institution in the past two years. The Commission’s decision is said to be based on “insufficient evidence” of the university’s compliance with several standards, including ethics and integrity. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has also criticized the decision and urged for its reversal. Walton now seeks an urgent meeting with the Commission and the U.S. Department of Education to discuss a resolution.
