Beaufort County Community College in Washington, North Carolina will be hosting Rebecca Marmaduke of the Braver Angels of North Carolina on September 20th to discuss engaging in civil and meaningful political conversations. Braver Angels, a non-profit, bipartisan citizens’ movement founded in 2016, aims to bridge the partisan divide in the United States.

The forum will be held in the college’s auditorium in the Continuing Education Building, and students, employees, and the public are encouraged to attend. Robin Warfield and Beaufort County Commissioner John Rebholz will be available to answer any questions.

Rebecca Marmaduke, a retired corporate communications and training professional who previously worked with companies like Citi and Fidelity Investments, now works with the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh and serves as an ambassador for Braver Angels.

Braver Angels focuses on bringing citizens with different political views together in a working alliance to create new ways for them to communicate, participate in public life, and influence the direction of the nation. Through meaningful discussions, the organization aims to reduce the heated rhetoric that often prevents real conversations and a proper understanding of our differences.

Dr. Dave Loope, the president of Beaufort County Community College, believes that as a community college, it is their mission to help students and residents understand the importance of civil communication in maintaining a democratic republic for future generations.

The objective of the forum is not to push a political agenda or change participants’ minds, but rather to provide a safe space for deeper understanding. Braver Angels aims to help people listen, understand, and build trust, clarify disagreements, and find common ground based on shared values.

The organization plans to continue its work by forming small groups that can engage in meaningful and civil dialogue, with the goal of demonstrating that individuals from different political persuasions can work together across political divides.

This event offers an opportunity for individuals to learn and practice civil discourse, which is essential in fostering understanding and bridging the partisan divide that currently exists in the United States. It also reinforces the importance of respectful dialogue in a democratic society.
