Trump lawsuit by New York attorney general “trial-ready,” announces her office

New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office is moving forward with a trial in its $250 million lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, his children, and his company. The lawsuit, filed in September 2022, accuses the Trump family and Trump Organization executives of engaging in widespread fraud related to property valuations and Trump’s personal financial statements. The case is seeking financial damages and sanctions that would effectively shut down the Trump Organization’s operations in New York.

The lawsuit alleges that the Trumps orchestrated an extensive fraudulent scheme, but claims against Ivanka Trump have been dismissed by a New York appeals court. Despite the dismissal, the case against Trump, his sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr., and the Trump Organization will proceed to trial. All parties involved have vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

The trial is scheduled to take place on October 2nd, a date that Judge Arthur Engoron has described as “set in stone.” Engoron has rejected multiple attempts by Trump’s attorneys to delay the trial. This legal battle comes at a time when Trump is once again running for president and facing a series of other legal challenges.

In April, Trump was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on 34 felonies related to reimbursements for an alleged “hush money” payment made to an adult film star before the 2016 election. He has pleaded not guilty in that case, which is set for trial in March 2024. Additionally, Trump was found liable by a jury in May for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll in a federal civil trial. He is currently appealing that decision.

Further legal troubles await Trump as he faces federal charges related to the alleged “willful retention” of national security information after leaving the White House. In July, he revealed that he had received a letter identifying him as a target in a federal investigation into the January 6, 2021 insurrection and efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump has not been charged in connection with the investigation and denies any wrongdoing.

The upcoming trial in New York is just one of several legal battles that Trump is currently facing. Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis has indicated that a grand jury may consider charges related to her office’s two-year investigation into efforts to overturn the state’s election results. Throughout these cases, Trump has accused prosecutors of bias and maintained his innocence.

As the trial date approaches, the outcome of this lawsuit will have significant implications for the Trump Organization and its future operations in New York. It will also serve as another chapter in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Donald Trump.
