WHYY, Academy of Natural Sciences discuss Atlantic Sturgeon, Delaware River, endangered species
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University recently hosted a gathering to discuss the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, a species that has inhabited the Delaware River for over 70 million years. The species, once abundant, has been drastically reduced due to factors such as habitat loss, poor water quality, and vessel strikes. The Delaware River, which was once the world’s largest sturgeon producer, now hosts an estimated 200. Marine science professor Eric Hilton emphasized the importance of conservation efforts in everyday life to preserve the species. The event highlighted the necessity of research and protection for endangered species under the Endangered Species Act.
