Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog involved in the largest Groundhog Day celebration in the US, has predicted an early spring. The prediction was made in Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania, where an estimated 10,000 people gathered to witness the event. Pennsylvania Governor, Josh Shapiro, declared Phil as the official meteorologist for Pennsylvania during the festivities. The tradition of Groundhog Day originates from European farm life and is celebrated at the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Groundhog weather-predicting clubs are active in more than a dozen states in the US and Canadian provinces.
