The University of Pennsylvania has started repatriating hundreds of skulls, previously used to further white supremacist views through dubious scientific research. These skulls belonged to Black Philadelphians and were part of the Morton Cranial Collection. The collection was made by Samuel George Morton in the 1830s, who falsely claimed that different races were separate species of humans, with whites being superior. Some community leaders and advocates have challenged the repatriation process, claiming they were not consulted. The university’s decision to inter the remains in Eden Cemetery, a local historic Black cemetery, sparked controversy. The university’s next steps, guided by an advisory committee, are to identify and return all the individuals in the mausoleum.
