Eakins Oval study part of Ben Franklin Parkway redesign

The section of Spring Garden Street/Benjamin Franklin Parkway in front of the Art Museum in Philadelphia may be shut down and converted into a park. A $1.8 million state grant will fund a survey of the area, as well as environmental clearances and preliminary design work. The redesign is aimed at making the Parkway a more attractive destination and is part of the Reimagine Ben Franklin Parkway initiative. In a couple of months, the city will release the full conceptual plan for the redesign project. Potential improvements could include expanding Eakins Oval, creating bike lanes and walking paths, expanding Logan Square, and improving connections to the Schuylkill River. The work could take between five and 15 years.
