Northwest Side Neighbors Gather to Honor Deaths of Homeless Community Members

5

Residents in Jefferson Park, Far Northwest Side, gathered to remember community members who died due to complications from homelessness. The memorial was organized by Rep. Lindsey LaPointe’s office, Sen. Rob Martwick’s office, and other neighborhood advocacy groups, and aimed to humanize the issue of homelessness. LaPointe emphasized that the average lifespan of a homeless person is around 17 years shorter than a housed individual. Monica Dillon, an organizer with Northwest Side Homeless Outreach, stressed that these homeless individuals are neighbors who grew up in the area. The community has received a $335,000 grant to expand outreach to homeless individuals, but more resources are needed.
