Metra Set for Higher Fares, More Off-Peak Service on Electric District Line – Chicago Maroon

On February 1, the Chicagoland Metra Commuter Rail System carried out a new fare system, which consolidated its previous 10-zone system into a four-zone one. The system changes include an increase in ticket price from Hyde Park Stations to downtown from $2 to $3.75, the replacement of the $100 “Super Saver” all-zone pass with monthly passes ranging from $13 to $75, and a decrease in the number of free rides for students from 10 to five per quarter. The system changes were made as Metra faced financial struggles since the pandemic, with a 50% drop in ridership. Metra is planning infrastructure improvements and exploring the possibility of expanding the reduced-fare program for high school students to college students.
