The private service took place at The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, where Melania and Donald Trump were wed in 2005. Knavs had passed away on January 9 in Miami due to an undisclosed ailment.
The funeral procession was led by Melania and her father, Viktor Knavs. The family later gathered on the church’s steps as the casket was carried out.
Remembering Amalija Knavs
During Trump’s presidency, Knavs resided in New York with her husband and occasionally appeared at White House events. She was present at the 2018 ceremony where Melania unveiled her “Be Best” public awareness campaign.
The Knavses raised Melania and her older sister, Ines, in Sevnica, Slovenia, under Communist rule. Melania, initially named Melanija, changed her name after starting her modeling career. She met Donald Trump in New York in 1998 and later sponsored her parents’ U.S. immigration. They became U.S. citizens in 2018.
The funeral coincided with Donald Trump’s ongoing defamation trial in New York against former columnist E. Jean Carroll. Despite Trump’s lawyers’ request to delay the trial, the judge denied it. Consequently, Trump chose to miss a court session to attend the funeral.
