The Chicago City Council voted down an attempt to advance a non-binding referendum question that would ask voters if Chicago should remain a sanctuary city. The resolution, which sought to put the question on voting ballots, was opposed 31-16 at a special City Council meeting. This comes as part of a series of attempts by Alds. Ray Lopez (15th), Anthony Beale (9th), and David Moore (17th) to question Chicago’s status as a sanctuary city. This status doesn’t require Chicago to spend funds on migrants but bans officials, including law enforcement, from cooperating with federal agents when they arrest an undocumented person. The City Council has until January 2 to add an additional citywide referendum question to the March primary ballot.
