Newsom has previously stated that he would nominate a Black woman to fill the seat if Feinstein steps aside.

Feinstein’s decision to retire has also led to speculation about potential successors. U.S. Representatives Barbara Lee, Katie Porter, and Adam Schiff are among the leading contenders. Lee, who is Black, could have an advantage if she becomes the incumbent, but it remains unclear if Newsom would consider her since she is already running for the seat. Feinstein’s political career has been influential, breaking gender barriers as she rose from San Francisco’s City Hall to leadership roles in the U.S. Senate.

In recent years, Feinstein has taken a step back from senior roles in Congress. She relinquished the top Democratic spot on the Judiciary Committee in 2020 and declined to serve as the Senate president pro tempore earlier this year. Concerns about her ability to fulfill her duties have persisted, with some calling for her resignation.
