Syrian Suspected of Carrying Out Attack in Damascus Dies in Beirut Raid

BEIRUT (Reuters) – A Syrian youth suspected of carrying out an attack in Damascus in July, which claimed the lives of at least six people, died after throwing himself from a building during a raid in Beirut, according to Lebanese media and a security source.

The 23-year-old suspect, originally from Syria’s al-Tal region, had entered Lebanon illegally and settled with his relatives in Al-Salam, a southern suburb of Beirut, according to the security source.

The source revealed that members of the Hezbollah group conducted the raid at the suspect’s location. Upon discovering that his whereabouts had been exposed, the suspect made the decision to throw himself from the seventh floor of the building. He was immediately rushed to St. George Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Additionally, two of the suspect’s relatives were detained during the raid, as confirmed by the security source.

The attack in question took place on July 27 outside the Sayeda Zeinab shrine city south of the capital, Damascus. Syrian state media reported that a bomb had been planted in a vehicle, resulting in several deaths and injuries. The following day, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Lebanon due to its proximity to the conflict in neighboring Syria. With various armed groups operating within the country, including Hezbollah, the Lebanese government has been working tirelessly to maintain stability and prevent the spillover of violence.

As investigations continue into the attack and the suspect’s connections, Lebanese security forces remain vigilant in their efforts to combat terrorism and maintain peace within the country.

This latest incident serves as a reminder of the global threat posed by extremist groups and the need for international cooperation in combating terrorism. The Lebanese authorities are in close contact with their regional and international partners to exchange information and enhance security measures.

The situation in Lebanon remains complex, with ongoing political and socioeconomic challenges. It is imperative for the international community to support Lebanon in its efforts to maintain stability and security, as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of the devastating Beirut port explosion in August 2020 and the ongoing economic crisis.
