President Biden Declares Major Disaster in Illinois

In response to the severe storms and flooding that occurred in Illinois from June 29 to July 2, 2023, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has declared a major disaster in the state. This declaration allows for federal assistance to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the affected areas.

The primary focus of the federal assistance will be on Cook County, where individuals who have been affected by the disaster will be eligible for various forms of aid. This assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs aimed at helping individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

Additionally, federal funding will be available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures in Cook County. This means that the federal government will provide financial support to help mitigate the risks and damages caused by future disasters in the area.

To coordinate the federal recovery operations, Andrew D. Friend of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed. Friend will work closely with state and local authorities to ensure a coordinated and efficient response.

While damage assessments are still ongoing in other areas of the state, it is possible that more counties and additional forms of assistance may be designated once these assessments are completed.

Residents and business owners in the designated areas who have suffered losses can now begin applying for assistance through the DisasterAssistance.gov website, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or by using the FEMA App. Individuals who require the use of relay services can also provide FEMA with the number for their specific service.

For further information, members of the media are encouraged to contact the FEMA News Desk at (202) 646-3272 or FEMA-NEWS-DESK@FEMA.DHS.GOV.

This federal declaration of a major disaster in Illinois highlights the commitment of the Biden administration to provide support and resources to communities in need. By mobilizing federal assistance, the government aims to facilitate the recovery and rebuilding process, ensuring that those affected by the severe storms and flooding can rebuild their lives and communities.
