Charter Bus Crash in Pennsylvania Leaves Three Dead

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A charter bus carrying up to 50 people crashed and hit another vehicle on a Pennsylvania interstate, resulting in the tragic death of three bus passengers, according to state police. The accident occurred on Sunday around 11:50 p.m. during heavy rain on southbound Interstate 81, just north of Harrisburg.

According to the crash report, the bus veered off the roadway, struck an embankment, and rolled onto its right side before colliding with the back of a car that had come to a stop in the right lane of traffic.

Tragically, the three passengers were declared dead at the scene, while other individuals suffered injuries ranging from minor to severe. The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center received 28 patients from the crash, with two individuals admitted as inpatients, 16 being treated in the emergency department, and 10 already discharged. It was also reported that several other injured individuals were transported to a different hospital. Unfortunately, the identities of those who lost their lives have not yet been released.

Trooper Megan Frazer described the incident as a “mass casualty incident” due to the high number of people involved and the extent of the injuries. Eight ambulances and lifeline emergency response services were called to the scene to provide assistance.

As of Monday morning, the owner and driver of the charter bus remain unidentified. Frazer stated that further details about the crash may not be disclosed until Tuesday.

The devastating crash serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly during adverse weather conditions. The incident is currently under investigation, and authorities will be examining various factors such as the condition of the road, the driver’s actions, and any potential mechanical issues with the bus.

The Pennsylvania State Police urge all motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations, especially during inclement weather. Adhering to speed limits, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and being mindful of changing road conditions are essential for preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victims and their families affected by this tragic incident.
