Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm have secured their spots on Luke Donald’s 2023 European Ryder Cup team after earning their spots via the European Points List. The tournament will be played at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, located 10km outside of Rome, Italy. McIlroy will be making his seventh consecutive appearance in the Ryder Cup, while Rahm will be making his third consecutive appearance.
Rory McIlroy, 34 years old, is considered one of Team Europe’s most experienced and accomplished Ryder Cup players. With four Ryder Cup wins from six appearances, McIlroy will be looking to help Europe win back the Cup after it was regained by the United States in Whistling Straits two years ago. McIlroy has played in 28 matches, winning 12, halving four, and losing 12, with a total points tally of 14. He qualified for the team after winning the Race to Dubai and the FedEx Cup in 2022, and starting 2023 with a victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. Since then, McIlroy has finished inside the top ten in all four Major Championships and claimed a victory at the Genesis Scottish Open.
Jon Rahm, 28 years old and ranked third in the world, will be making his third appearance for Team Europe. He was part of the winning team in 2018 but experienced disappointment in the United States’ victory in 2021. Rahm has played eight matches in his previous Ryder Cup appearances, winning four, losing three, and halving one. He qualified for the team after closing out the 2022 season with victories at the Acciona Open de España and the DP World Tour Championship. Rahm had a strong start to 2023, winning back-to-back tournaments on the PGA TOUR and claiming his second Major title at The Masters.
McIlroy and Rahm bring a wealth of Ryder Cup experience to Team Europe. McIlroy has played in six consecutive Ryder Cups and has been part of every edition of the biennial contest since 2010. He has played in 28 matches, winning 12 and earning at least one point in each contest. Rahm made his Ryder Cup debut in 2018 and earned a memorable point in a singles match against Tiger Woods. In Whistling Straits, Rahm won 3.5 of Europe’s five points over the first two days of play.
Both McIlroy and Rahm have played with different partners in past Ryder Cups, giving Captain Luke Donald the flexibility to pair them with various teammates at Marco Simone. McIlroy’s most successful partnership to date has been with Thomas Pieters, while Rahm has played with four different partners in fourballs and foursomes matches.
The 2023 Ryder Cup will take place between September 25 – October 1 at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy. The tournament promises to be an exciting showdown between Team Europe and Team USA as they compete for the prestigious Ryder Cup trophy.
