CBP Seizes 567.6 Pounds of Methamphetamine at Calexico East Cargo Facility

CALEXICO, Calif. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Calexico East Cargo Facility made a significant drug seizure on Monday, discovering 100 packages filled with methamphetamine. The drugs, with an estimated street value of $567,600, were hidden in duffle bags within a shipment that entered the port from Mexico.

The incident occurred on August 28, when CBP officers encountered a 45-year-old male driver operating a 2023 tractor trailer. The driver presented a manifest for three tractors seeking admission into the United States. However, during the initial inspection, a CBP officer noticed irregularities and referred the driver and tractors to secondary inspection for further examination.

Upon closer inspection, CBP officers discovered anomalies in the second tractor, prompting them to call in a canine enforcement team. The canine alerted to the presence of narcotics, leading officers to uncover 100 packages concealed in five duffle bags within the trailer. Field tests confirmed the substances as methamphetamine, weighing a total of 567.6 pounds.

Roque Caza, CBP Area Port Director for Calexico, emphasized the continuous efforts of CBP officers in countering drug trafficking organizations. He stated, “As trafficking organizations continue to employ innovative ways to smuggle these dangerous drugs across our border, our officers remain steadfast in our mission and will continue to counter and disrupt the flow of illicit drugs coming into our country.”

The driver was detained and subsequently turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further processing. CBP officers seized both the vehicle and the narcotics, effectively preventing their distribution on the streets.

By intercepting these large quantities of methamphetamine, CBP officers have successfully disrupted the operations of drug trafficking organizations and prevented harmful drugs from reaching the streets.
