Milwaukee Woman Killed in Tragic Accident Involving Greenfield Police Officer

GREENFIELD, Wis. – A tragic incident occurred on Thursday evening in Greenfield, Wisconsin, resulting in the death of a 42-year-old Milwaukee woman. Greenfield police reported that an officer accidentally drove over the woman while responding to a welfare check call. The Milwaukee Medical Examiner has identified the victim as Tracie Dorpat.

The incident took place just before 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of 34th and Holmes in Greenfield. According to a news release, the responding officer was unaware that Dorpat was lying in the roadway when the officer struck her. Lexy Besaw, Dorpat’s daughter, expressed her disbelief, stating, “I see a squirrel in the car, I see cats all the time when I’m driving. I’ll slam on my brakes. So I’m not sure how you don’t see three-fourths of a person.”

Upon realizing what had happened, the officer immediately stopped, called for an ambulance, and rendered aid to Dorpat. Medics arrived and transported her to a hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening. However, tragically, she later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Besaw expressed her shock at the situation, stating, “I feel like, if you run anyone over in the stomach, that’s immediately life-threatening. She was talking and was awake and alert, and so that’s probably what they thought, maybe she feels fine.”

Besaw and her family were devastated to learn of Dorpat’s impending death at 11:00 p.m. when the hospital called them. Seeking answers, they are eagerly awaiting an explanation from the police department regarding how this tragic accident occurred and why Dorpat was not seen lying in the road.

Witnesses in the neighborhood reported seeing first responders on the scene on Thursday. Kyle Bast, a neighbor who witnessed the incident, stated, “You could visibly or clearly see her in pain in the abdomen area and back area, but by the time the ambulance came, she got onto the bed on her own power. It just didn’t feel like a life-threatening type of situation.”

The Greenfield Police Department has expressed its commitment to determining what happened and ensuring that policies, procedures, and training are in place to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future. The officer involved in the incident has not been named but has been placed on administrative leave.

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is currently investigating the incident, and the Wisconsin State Patrol will be reconstructing the scene. The West Allis Police Department is leading the investigation, and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office will conduct an independent review of the case.

In a news release, the Greenfield Police Department expressed their condolences to Dorpat’s family and emphasized their dedication to valuing the life and well-being of all community members. The loss of their loved one is deeply felt, and the department is committed to learning from this tragedy to prevent similar incidents in the future.
