Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has raised $1.3 million during the second quarter, sparking speculation about a potential third-party presidential run. This news has raised concerns among Democrats, who worry that a Manchin campaign could harm President Joe Biden’s chances of re-election and cost them control of the Senate. Manchin’s fundraising haul far surpasses the amounts raised by the two Republicans challenging his Senate seat, Gov. Jim Justice and Rep. Alex Mooney.

Manchin’s fundraising success comes as he prepares to headline a town hall event hosted by the centrist political group No Labels in New Hampshire. While Manchin denies that the event has anything to do with potential presidential aspirations, he has stated that he has not ruled out anything or ruled in anything. In a statement, Manchin emphasized the need for common-sense solutions to the nation’s pressing issues and expressed his concern over the growing divide in political parties and toxic political rhetoric.

Manchin has yet to announce whether he will seek re-election to the Senate. West Virginia has become increasingly conservative, and Manchin’s approval ratings have declined due to his support for Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, which he has now threatened to repeal due to implementation issues.

John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.) advised Manchin against running, stating that it would be a terrible idea and would help Donald Trump. However, Manchin has dismissed these concerns, citing former President Bill Clinton’s successful election in 1992 despite a challenge from independent businessman Ross Perot.
