Ursula von der Leyen has announced her candidacy for a second term as the head of the European Commission. She’s expected to become the lead candidate of the center-right European People’s Party (EPP) in the forthcoming European Parliament elections in June. Despite her “iron style of leadership” often clashing with EU countries, Politico reports she is likely to receive support from the European Council. However, her decision-making on sensitive topics such as supporting Israel and China’s policy has drawn criticism from EU diplomats and commissioners. Von der Leyen first assumed the European Commission leadership role in December 2019, aiming to strengthen the EU’s geopolitical role.
