In January, schools across San Diego County, including Kempton Street Literacy Academy and Bancroft Elementary, experienced severe flooding that required emergency evacuations and substantial damage to their facilities. The floodwaters came quickly, rose higher than the heads of kindergarten students, and forced the principal and staff to evacuate the children through a window. In the aftermath, schools served as community resource centers where affected families could access food, clothing, mental health counseling, and housing assistance. La Mesa-Spring Valley School District alone has estimated the cost of the storm damage at between $10 million to $15 million. San Diego County Office of Education’s SOUL Academy was also closed due to flood damage and currently operates in a virtual learning format.
