Houston couple’s $3 million IRS refund check stolen

Two men, Benjamin Thomas and Kuljinder Singh Hunjan, were sentenced to federal prison for stealing a $2,932,446.84 IRS tax refund from a Houston couple and depositing it into a fraudulent bank account in the victims’ names at Regions Bank. The criminals were identified through surveillance footage and fingerprints, and Thomas was arrested while driving a stolen Lamborghini. Thomas has been sentenced to 90 months in prison, and Hunjan received a 42-month sentence, both also require to serve three years of supervised release and pay around $4.4 million in restitution. A third accomplice, Whitley Rachelle Carter, is due for sentencing in May and facing up to 30 years in federal prison and a $1 million fine.
