Kobach targeting trans students – Dallas Voice

In Kansas, Attorney General Kris Kobach has instructed public schools that they must inform parents if their children identify as transgender or nonbinary, even if the students have not come out to their parents. Kobach contends that not doing so infringes on parents’ rights. Kobach’s move, not rooted in a specific state law, follows his successful attempts last year to block changes to transgender people’s birth certificates and driver’s licenses to align with their gender identities. LGBTQ+ rights advocates view this move as dangerous, arguing that it puts transgender and nonbinary youth at risk. While there are states with laws requiring or encouraging schools to notify parents if their children socially transition or present as nonbinary, Kansas is not among them.
