The strategy could allow him to face an underfunded Democrat in the general election instead of a strong Republican. Hayes called the move a deception of Republican donors. DeMaio’s tactic aligns with a recent trend where politicians help competitors from the opposing party, hoping they will be easier to beat in a runoff.
