Encinitas Assembly member’s bill would ban e-bikes for kids under 12 – NBC 7 San Diego

California Assembly member Tasha Boerner has proposed a bill (Assembly Bill 2234) to ban e-bikes for children under the age of 12, citing continuing injuries and unsafe bike behavior. If the bill passes, children aged 12 and above could ride an e-bike provided they’ve taken an online driver safety course and hold a state-issued ID. Bill Connard, who works at OB E-bikes, questioned the state ID requirement, given the high usage of e-bikes among minors, and the impact on the DMV and bureaucracy. The bill will be considered for action next month, with supporters hoping it will become law by the end of the year. OB E-bikes is scheduled to host a free e-bike safety course on March 2.
