Missouri National Guard members will aid Texas border effort

11

Missouri Governor Mike Parson is sending up to 200 Missouri National Guard members and 22 State Highway Patrol troopers to the Texas border with Mexico. This move is in response to what Parson blames on President Joe Biden’s administration’s handling of immigration and the link to the country’s fentanyl crisis. Parson has requested roughly $2.3 million from Missouri lawmakers to cover the cost of this deployment. This move is separate from federal border enforcement activities, with Missouri’s forces operating under Texas’ directive. Parson’s announcement comes as Republicans ramp up attention on the U.S.-Mexico border ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
