Texas-based oil refineries, petrochemical plants, and other industrial sites have reported the release of 2.1 million pounds of unauthorized air pollution during freezing weather conditions, according to data analysis by the Environment Texas Research and Policy Center. The report highlights 92 incidents of toxic chemical release across 27 counties from January 13 to 16. The Houston area experienced almost a third of these incidents. Significant pollution sources included a West Texas Pipeline freeze which resulted in the release of around 300,000 pounds of methane, and ExxonMobil refineries in Beaumont and Baytown, which respectively released 150,000 and over 125,000 pounds of chemicals due to equipment degradation and cold impact.
