Battle over benefits: Army vet’s Supreme Court fight for G.I. Bill could impact 1.2 million soldiers
Jim Rudisill, an Army veteran, is battling the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in the Supreme Court over claims that he was denied the benefits he earned through military service. After serving one combat tour in Afghanistan and two in Iraq, Rudisill used the Montgomery G.I. Bill to earn his bachelor’s degree. However, when he attempted to use the post-9/11 G.I. Bill for his graduate degree at Yale Divinity School, he was denied on the grounds that he had to exhaust his remaining benefits under the Montgomery G.I. Bill first. Attorneys general from 33 states are supporting Rudisill, and if the court rules in his favor, 1.7 million veterans could be eligible for more benefits.
