Stadiums Across the Country Are Using a Volunteer Labor System Ripe for Exploitation

16

A series of investigations by Voice of San Diego has found that major league sports venues across the U.S., such as Yankee Stadium, Lambeau Field, SoFi Stadium, and Truist Park, depend on an easily exploited volunteer labor system for their concession stands. Key issues include some ‘charities’ fraudulently set up to run these stands, such as Chula Vista Fast Pitch, which falsely claimed to support girls’ softball and operated at Petco Park and Snapdragon Stadium for nine years. Some organizations were found paying workers under the table and below minimum wage. Industry insiders have called for increased oversight by concession companies and argue that over-reliance on volunteer groups can lead to exploitation. The use of volunteer labor reportedly saves concession companies multi-million dollar sums annually.
