Federal assess imposes new redistricting strategize on Galveston County – Houston Public Media
Galveston County in Texas has been ordered to adopt a new political map by federal judge Jeffrey Brown. The county had failed to create a compliant map themselves and had previously rejected the map imposed. The new map, dubbed Map 1, adheres to Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by prohibiting racial gerrymandering and preserves the majority coalition of Black and Latino voters in the region. The order came after the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a stay on Brown’s initial order to redraw the map; it will rehear the case in May.
