Classes were suspended at Jackson State University (JSU) on Monday following the death of student Jaylen Burns in an on-campus shooting incident. Burns was reportedly shot multiple times at the University Pointe Apartment Complex on Valley Street, according to a statement by Acting President Elayne Hayes-Anthony.

Burns, an industrial technology major from Chicago, attempted to drive himself to a hospital but couldn’t make it. The Jackson Police Department (JPD) is assisting campus police with the investigation into the fatal shooting.

Police made contact with Burns at Lynch Street and Alta Vista. A witness at the scene confirmed the shooting had occurred on the JSU campus. Officers from JPD worked through the night and into Monday morning, investigating the crime scene at the University Pointe Apartment Complex.
