Massachusetts Governor Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Hurricane Lee

Hurricane Lee made landfall on Friday morning after spending 10 days in the Atlantic, reaching Category 5 status at one point. The storm is expected to continue impacting eastern New England and Atlantic Canada on Saturday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and pounding surf.

According to AccuWeather hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski, the worst conditions are expected to occur on Saturday morning as Lee tracks more than 100 miles to the east. The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings for hurricane conditions and coastal flooding in parts of eastern Maine, southern New Brunswick, and western Nova Scotia.

In anticipation of the storm’s impact, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey declared a state of emergency on Friday. Maine also declared a state of emergency, as it faced its first hurricane watch in 15 years on Thursday afternoon.

The strongest winds are expected to occur from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday across outer Cape Cod through Nantucket, with wind gusts reaching up to 55-65 mph. Coastal flooding is also a concern, especially during high tide on Saturday morning.

Canadian provinces are also bracing for the impact of Hurricane Lee. Parts of southern New Brunswick experienced hurricane conditions on Friday, and most of Nova Scotia is expected to face similar conditions on Saturday. Downed trees and power outages are likely due to the storm.
