Charter Bus Accident in Orange County, NY Leaves One Dead

WAWAYANDA, N.Y. — A charter bus carrying part of the Farmingdale High School marching band has overturned on Interstate 84, leaving one person dead, sources report to CBS News New York. The accident occurred near Wawayanda, a town approximately two hours northwest of New York City.

The bus crash, whose cause remains unknown, involved one of six buses transporting about 300 students to a band camp in Greeley, Penn.

Injuries and Hospitalizations Following the Bus Crash

Initial reports indicate that 45 people were on board the overturned bus. Of these, five individuals have suffered severe injuries. The injured have been rushed to Garnet Health Medical in Middletown, N.Y., Westchester Medical Center, and Bon Secours Community Hospital, according to Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus.

SUNY Orange College is serving as the reunification point for those taken to Garnet Health Medical, as confirmed by Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano. The mayor also specified that the students on the five other buses, not involved in the crash, are expected to return to Farmingdale Thursday evening.

Details about the Farmingdale High School Band Camp Trip

CBS New York’s Jennifer McLogan received information from students of Farmingdale High School that ninth graders were on the bus involved in the crash. The students were headed for band camp from Thursday till Sunday.

Scenes from the accident site show the charter bus in the median of Interstate 84, seemingly having rolled down part of the slope before coming to a halt on its side. Numerous emergency responders were visible on site. Windows on one side of the bus were shattered, with a ladder raised against the bus near the broken windows.

New York State Police confirmed the closure of Interstate 84 westbound at Exit 15.
