Milwaukee Politics Veteran Mark Borkowski Retires from Reelection after 32 Years

Milwaukee Ald. Mark Borkowski, who has represented the city’s 11th district since 2015, announced on Tuesday that he will not seek reelection. This decision marks the end of an era, as it will be the first time since the George H.W. Bush administration that Borkowski’s name will not appear on a Milwaukee spring election ballot.

Having served as a Milwaukee County supervisor for 23 years prior to his current position, Borkowski has had a long and successful career in public service. He first entered the political arena in 1992 when he was elected as a county supervisor. In 2015, he began representing the 11th district and went on to win reelection in 2016 and 2020.

“It has been an honor and privilege to have represented the south side for 32 years,” said Borkowski. “I entered public service to be the voice of my constituents, and I am proud of my record of constituent service and responsible public policy. I feel that I have represented my constituents well.”

During his time as an alderman, Borkowski has made significant contributions to the city of Milwaukee. He currently serves as the chair of the Milwaukee Common Council’s Judiciary and Legislation Committee, as well as the vice chair of the Licenses Committee. Additionally, he is a member of the Steering & Rules Committee, Public Safety and Health Committee, Milwaukee Board of Harbor Commissioners, and Foundation for Milwaukee Fire Safety Center. His dedication to these roles has allowed him to make a positive impact on the city and its residents.

Borkowski’s commitment to education is also worth noting. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Carroll University (then Caroll College) in 1981, and later pursued his master’s degree from Cardinal Stritch University. This educational background has undoubtedly informed his work as an alderman and county supervisor, enabling him to make informed decisions for the betterment of his constituents.

As Borkowski prepares to step away from public office, the city of Milwaukee will undoubtedly feel the impact of his absence. However, his legacy of dedicated service and responsible public policy will continue to resonate throughout the community. The upcoming election will bring new candidates vying to represent the 11th district, and the voters will have a crucial decision to make in selecting the next individual to carry on Borkowski’s work.
