Serial Killer Suspect Described as “Demon” by Investigator

Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Carter has described the suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings, Rex Heuermann, as a “demon” and stated that authorities are still actively working on the case. The Long Island community has been terrorized by these killings for over a decade, and Carter has referred to the acts committed by the suspect as the worst he has ever seen. Heuermann, aged 59, was apprehended in New York City on Thursday and charged with murder in connection to the deaths of three of the four women known as the “Gilgo Four.” He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody.

Investigations into the unsolved killings began in 2010 when the disappearance of a woman led to the discovery of 10 sets of human remains, in addition to hers, at Gilgo Beach. The arrest of Heuermann, a New York architect, came after over a year of exploration by the task force investigating the case. He is also considered the prime suspect in a fourth murder. Carter has suggested that there may be more victims as the investigation continues and more evidence is gathered. He expressed sympathy for the families of the victims, acknowledging the pain they have endured over the past decade.

The multi-jurisdictional task force was formed in early 2022, with investigators from various agencies including the Suffolk County Police, New York State Police, FBI, and others. Carter commended the dedication of the detectives involved, emphasizing that they have been working on the case for over a decade without quitting. The breakthrough in the case was made possible through the analysis of cell phone data, credit card bills, and DNA testing. In January 2023, a sample of Heuermann’s DNA was obtained from crust left in a pizza box he had discarded.

Carter explained that the arrest of the suspect was prompted by concerns for public safety and the possibility that he may target another victim. The investigators are now focusing on tracing Heuermann’s activities and whereabouts from the time the victims’ remains were discovered in 2010 up until his arrest on Thursday. They are also following up on tips and conducting interviews with witnesses. Heuermann’s wife and two children are cooperating with the investigation.

Carter expressed relief that the arrest had finally been made, stating that justice for the victims and their families is long overdue. He emphasized that the victims were mothers, daughters, and members of the community who did not deserve what happened to them. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are determined to bring closure to the case and ensure that the perpetrator faces justice for his crimes.
