Twelve-year-old BMX rider Liam Bowersox was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that causes the heart to enlarge and obstruct the flow of blood, following a routine doctor’s visit for a cold. The condition is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in athletes. Since his diagnosis, Bowersox has remained positive, undergone surgery to install an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, and is now gradually returning to his sport. His doctors and family are urging everyone to get annual physicals and consider heart screenings. The family is also partnering with the Anthony Bates Foundation to host multiple heart screening events.
