The US freight railroad industry, worth $99 billion, is working on a project named RailPulse to develop a unified GPS tracking system for railcars. Customers would be able to track the real-time location of shipments, like Amazon packages, bringing greater transparency to the process. The system would rely on paid services, including a $3.50 monthly subscription fee per car, and hopes to include all major US freight railroads. Half of these, including Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City, are already signed up. RailPulse’s first customer is global crop trader and processor Bunge.
