US and British strikes on Houthi sites in Yemen answer militants’ surge in Red Sea attacks on ships

The US and the UK have launched a series of airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen following a surge in attacks by the Iran-backed militia on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. American and British fighter jets reportedly hit around 18 sites, targeting missiles, launchers, rockets, drones, and unmanned surface and underwater vehicles. While this is the fourth combined operation by the US and UK against the Houthis since January 12, counterattacks have not appeared to curb the militants’ campaign. The Houthis have launched at least 57 attacks on commercial and military ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 19. The continued threat has led to shipping companies rerouting their vessels, opting for a longer, costlier and less efficient passage around Africa through the Cape of Good Hope.
