San Diego State University and the SDSU School of Art and Design are presenting “The Imaginary Amazon,” an exhibition of contemporary and historical art and material culture revolving around the Amazon Rainforest region. Curated by art history professor Gillian Sneed, the exhibition features various media by trained and self-taught artists, including Indigenous artists from the Amazon region. The works address themes such as visual culture, history, ecology, cartography, botany, imperialism, and Indigenous metaphysics. The exhibition aims to raise awareness around the pressing environmental and cultural crisis faced by the Amazon region, home to 10% of all known plant and wildlife species. The show is supported by various organizations, including the School of Art and Design, the Division of Research and Innovation, and the Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies.
