The European Union has launched a naval mission, named EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, on February 19 to help protect shipping in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf from attacks by the Yemeni Houthis. The mission will ensure the presence of EU naval forces in the area where attacks on international commercial vessels have been occurring since October 2023. The European military has been authorized to monitor the maritime situation, escort commercial vessels, and protect them from potential attacks at sea. The mission will be commanded by Greek commander Vassilios Gryparis and headquartered in Larissa, Greece. The EU’s decision follows a series of attacks by the Yemeni Houthis on merchant vessels in response to Israel’s military operation against Palestinian group Hamas.
