Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old non-binary student at Owasso High School in Oklahoma, passed away after a brutal attack by three older female students on February 7, 2024. The case was not widely reported until a week later, and most media outlets misgendered and deadnamed the teenager. In response to this incident, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation issued a “Guidance for reporters, advocates, and LGBTQ supporters on death of Nex Benedict”. The report has shed light on the state of Oklahoma’s lack of protection for LGBTQ youth, with no hate crimes protection or nondiscrimination policies. A record number of 54 anti-LGBTQ bills are currently being considered by the Oklahoma state legislature.
