Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI informant charged with fabricating allegations about a bribery scheme involving Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and a Ukrainian energy company, has extensive connections with Russian intelligence agencies, the Justice Department claims. Smirnov, a US-Israeli dual citizen, reportedly admitted that Russian intelligence officials were involved in spreading a false story about Hunter Biden. The Justice Department has argued against Smirnov’s request to be released ahead of trial, citing contacts with foreign intelligence agencies, plans to leave the US, access to substantial undisclosed funds, and the ability to obtain a new passport. The government also claims that Smirnov is actively disseminating new falsehoods that could affect US elections following meetings with Russian intelligence officials.
