Chicago police will be out of schools next fall. It’s up to the district to make the move work.
The Chicago Board of Education voted to remove police from the remaining high schools that still have them, prioritizing ideology over practicality. Critics argue that the presence of police in schools increases the chances of Black students getting arrested, as the majority of schools still employing police are mostly Black schools. Despite opposition, many believe that the officers play a vital role in maintaining students’ safety. However, the decision has antagonized those who wanted to maintain the status quo of community decision-making. Chicago Public Schools will now have to help the affected schools form alternative plans for the next school year.
