Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov has been charged with fabricating a bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden and his son. Smirnov claimed to have evidence that executives from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid the Bidens $5 million each in 2015, allegations which became central to a Republican impeachment inquiry. The prosecution asserts Smirnov has ties to Russian intelligence, and has urged Judge Otis Wright II to keep him in custody, fearing he may flee the country. Smirnov, who has dual Israeli-U.S. citizenship, has not yet entered a plea. He was an FBI informant for over a decade before making these allegations in June 2020.
