The Australian Automotive Association’s (AAA) Real-World Testing Program has revealed significant discrepancies between fuel efficiency results in lab environments and their performance on open roads. Seven out of thirteen tested vehicles demonstrated on-road fuel efficiency within 5% of lab results, but five vehicles used between 9% and 20% more fuel than estimated. The 2021 BMW X3, the 2023 MG 3, the 2022 Audi Q5, the 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, and the 2023 Volvo XC40 were the worst performers. Notably, the Toyota Camry showed 1% less fuel consumption in the real world than predicted, and the 2023 Kia Carnival used 7% less. However, three cars, including the Carnival, exceeded Australian regulatory limits for nitrogen oxides, and the MG 3 showed carbon monoxide emissions 85% greater than regulated lab test limits.
