Mickey Mouse, the iconic Disney character, will transition into the public domain in 2024 when Disney’s copyright on the character’s first screen release, the 1928 film “Steamboat Willie,” expires. The initial release features Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse and will soon be available for public use. Disney still holds a separate trademark on Mickey as a corporate mascot and brand identifier, preventing deceptive use of the character. Other notable characters and works entering the public domain soon include Tigger from “The House at Pooh Corner,” Charlie Chaplin’s “Circus,” Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando,” and Bertolt Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera.”
