Biden Administration Boosts Zero-Emissions Ports with Clean Ports Program
The Biden administration takes another step towards zero-emission operations in America’s ports as applications for the $3 billion Clean Ports Program open. The funding, available to U.S. ports, aims to reduce mobile source emissions through upgraded equipment and infrastructure.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the initiative in Wilmington, N.C. EPA Administrator Michael Regan, formerly part of Gov. Roy Cooper’s administration, was present to deliver the announcement. The funding comes from the $891 million Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
Ports can now apply to the Clean Ports Program until May 28. “Today’s funding announcement aligns with President Biden’s vision of economic growth paired with globally competitive, future-oriented solutions,” Regan stated. The $3 billion will promote the installation of cleaner, more efficient technologies, significantly reducing air pollution for port workers and neighboring communities.
In 2022, the Port of Wilmington’s container terminal was named the most productive in the country by the Container Port Performance Index. It also ranked 44th globally, according to a technical report by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
