Librarians may be prosecuted in the right’s latest anti-education crusade

GOP lawmakers across several states are working towards prosecuting librarians for distributing “obscene material” to minors. The West Virginia House of Delegates recently passed a bill that removes criminal protections for schools, public libraries, and museums that distribute such material without the presence of a minor’s parent or guardian. The legislation, lack clarity on what constitutes obscenity, leading to concerns that it may hamper the display of artwork and sexually explicit content in books. The ACLU of West Virginia claimed the bill’s ambiguity is designed to create confusion for educators. Similar laws have been proposed in Georgia, while Maryland is considering a bill to protect librarians and counter book bans.
