Preliminary data from the Houston Police Department indicates that there were 348 murders in Houston in 2023, marking a 20% drop from 2022’s 434 murders. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to 118 murders last year, a 15% decrease from 2022. However, the city’s murder rate was still higher in 2023 compared to 398 murders in 2020 and 269 in 2019. Thaddeus Johnson, a senior fellow at the Council on Criminal Justice and a professor of criminology at Georgia State University, believes the downward trend will likely continue until it reaches pre-pandemic levels.
