McCarthy’s impeachment whip count takes center stage at the White House

White House Officials Assessing the Possibility of a Formal Impeachment Inquiry into President Biden

As House Republicans continue to ramp up their calls for impeachment, White House officials are closely monitoring whether House Speaker Kevin McCarthy can garner enough votes to initiate a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. According to two individuals familiar with the White House’s deliberations, this is the primary concern for the administration at the moment.

“That’s the first question on the table,” one of the sources stated, indicating that recent remarks made by McCarthy have raised the threshold for moving forward with an impeachment process.

McCarthy recently told Breitbart News that pursuing an impeachment of President Biden would necessitate a formal vote on the House floor rather than a unilateral declaration by one individual. This comment seems to be directed at members like Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has been demanding that Republicans push for Biden’s impeachment in exchange for other policy concessions.

House members are set to reconvene in Washington on September 12 after their August recess, which could potentially provide an opportunity for further discussions on the matter.

Meanwhile, the White House has been proactively assembling a team of legal, legislative, and communications experts to address the multitude of investigations initiated by House Republicans since they regained the majority in early 2023. In preparation for a potential shift in power, the Biden administration hired prominent Veterans Affairs attorney Dick Sauber to lead their response, as previously reported by CNN.

Sauber, currently serving as deputy counsel to the president, has been joined by Russell Anello, a former House staff counsel who played a similar role in crafting the Obama administration’s response to Republican-led investigations. Together, Sauber and Anello are leading the White House Counsel’s Office’s response team, which convenes multiple times per week, according to an additional source familiar with the matter.

As the impeachment drumbeat grows louder among House Republicans, the White House remains attentive to the political landscape and the possibility of a formal impeachment inquiry. The outcome of McCarthy’s ability to rally sufficient support for such an inquiry will be crucial in determining the trajectory of these impeachment discussions.
